Cambodia Safe Enough For Grandma

April 30th, 2008 Author: admin

Cambodia has a reputation as a place that is very dangerous, this is very far from the truth. As is true with a lot of things, the general public’s perception of Cambodia is slanted by press reports that serve the interests of the publishers, rather than the reading public. Cambodia is certainly not alone in this regards, Nicaragua and Myanmar are other good examples of the media filling the information channels with negative information, why would the media do this you might ask yourself? A couple of reasons come to the top quickly.

The number one reason, money! Negative images sell more than positive, we like our blood and gore and the viler the better. I would challenge the news networks to show pan shots of all disasters, but who wants to see kids playing in the streets or houses that are not on fire? Time and again what looks to be terrible beyond comprehension, when viewed in person on the scene are small scale. Don’t get me wrong, for the people involved, they are terrible life changing events, but when viewed in a global perspective they are not as important as they are portrayed. We can use more stories on global warming , dengue and or better yet something useful like how to train your cat, would be more in order than some of the sensational news that we are being given.

As a example, at the end of the ASEAN Travel Forum their was an outbreak of civil disturbances in Cambodia that lasted for a couple of hours, and the major international news networks showed repeatedly for days on end the same car burning at the Thailand embassy, well there was only one car burning, only one embassy affected, and a couple of hotels, the rest of city was business as usual. The day after the event you would have been hard pressed to know that it had even happened. What they didn’t show was hundreds of travel professions having a great time taking in the sights of Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat, and Sihanoukville. Not one person was killed in this event yet the damage to the Cambodia economy caused by all of the negative media, was way out of proportion and caused more monetary damage than the actual event!

The 2nd best reason is that it is a lot easier to flow with the public’s perception, than to seek a paradigm change. People remember the images of the bones of the Killing Fields, from the genocide that occurred BEFORE more than half of today’s population of Cambodia was born. People want their beliefs to be true, change is hard, even for things that don’t affect you. Remember when you first petted a snake or the first time you went swimming? After you made the turn, it was a lot easier to believe in the other direction wasn’t it? The media doesn’t get paid to change minds; they only get paid when you view their product. Peter Benchley feels terrible today for the havoc that he set loose on sharks, with his movie Jaws, yet a lot more people get killed by tiger mosquitoes each and every year than have been killed by sharks since records have been reported. Yet Malaria and the growing dengue threat which are grossly under reported when compared to the suffering that they cause.

There certainly are things that are bad in Cambodia, but the overwhelming majority of life is improving, and as far as safety is concern, I will take my chances here in Cambodia, or in the ocean swimming with sharks, rather than walking around at night in cites in the US, like Washington DC, Miami or LA, where you can get killed for wearing the wrong color shirt. Anyone that lives in Cambodia can tell you about the looks that you get when you say that you are going to visit here, much less if you are going to live here. We get concerned mothers, fathers and grandmothers that come here all the time to make sure that their Little Johnny is OK and they leave feeling much better about having little Suzie chilling on the beach in Cambodia, and how can you not feel that way when you turn of the TV and go to Cambodia and all you see are enthusiastic smiling faces waving at you all day and yelling, Hello!

Economy of Thailand

April 29th, 2008 Author: admin

One of the prosperous East Asian economies is the economy of Thailand. It has achieved impressive growth rates. This growth per capita has remained positive for several decades. In Thailand the state has intervened in economy, but in a passive way.

Government polices have been the most effective in maintaining a macroeconomic equilibrium that is conducive to trade, investment, and the growth of firms. Most resource allocations have contributed factor productivity. The market and private sector institutions, but not state economic policies determine them.

Thailand differs from other newly industrialized countries (NICs) in Asia. There governments helped repair market failures. But Thailand has relied on the market to overcome government failures.

The World Bank’s East Asian Miracle report concludes that stable macroeconomic policies are necessary for strong growth. And Thailand is a confirmation of this conclusion. Thai technocrats in the Central Bank, Ministry of Finance, and Prime Minister’s Office have provided macroeconomic policies conducive to export, domestic and foreign investment, and the growth of a strong private sector, which has emphasized productive investment over pure rent seeking. The stable macroeconomic environment, marked by low inflation and a stable exchange rate, has encouraged the diversification of agricultural exports away from rice and rubber. Stable prices have also encouraged foreign direct investment and a shift away from exporting light manufactures to higher value-added wares, notably electronics (World Bank. 1993)

Until the economic growth surge of the latter 1980s, the Thai government had had a fairly good record in its provision of roads, railroads, electricity, and ports. Today’s transport bottlenecks are primarily the result of the slowdown in infrastructural investments during the economic austerity program of the mid-1980s, which coincided with an anticipated surge in investment and economic growth. Government capital expenditures, which are directed primarily at infrastructure, declined from 5.4 percent of GDP in the 1970s to 4.0 percent in 1980, falling further to 2.7 percent in 1990(Siamwalla, Ammar. 1990).

Industrial policies have not been marked by industrial sector planning or by any industrial targeting strategy. The Thai state doesn’t control the markets for credit and foreign exchange. There also has been little coordination or coherence in the use of existing industrial policy instrumentstariffs, investment promotions, capacity controls, and local content regulations.

A calm monetary environment has made it possible for the private sector to grow and for the banks to assume investment coordination functions. The Thai state’s information base at the sectoral level has been quite inadequate. Intelligent intervention requires some vision of the changing industrial structure. Moreover, there needs to be some investment coordination not only among private firms, but also between the private and public sectors. Thailand’s experience here has been variable. Finally, Thailand could have used more sectoral vision concerning infrastructure. Privatization of urban projects has now yielded a whole new set of problems, but there is a big opportunity for policymakers to better coordinate infrastructure development in the provinces.

The state is struggling to keep up with the demands of a rapidly changing economy. Even though Thailand has enjoyed success, it is not well prepared for the next stage of industrialization. Its investments in secondary education and its output of technicians and engineers fall seriously short of the country’s needs. The state is institutionally ill equipped to assume the monitoring, enforcement, and social welfare functions for regulating an advanced industrial economy. At present, Thailand hardly needs an activist state. Instead it needs a more effective minimalist state able to anticipate the complex problems that will inevitably arise down the road (Christensen, Scott R. 1993).

Tsunami Is The Tsunami The Tip Of More Natural Disasters On The Way

April 28th, 2008 Author: admin

During the past few days, news is coming in about the tsunami that hit southeast Asian nations and the devastation it has caused.

The world is now enveloped in a deep sadness and there is a widespread out pouring of sympathy for the victims of this catastrophe.

There is a rumor circulating in certain circles that many world renowned astronomers and intelligence agencies of the world have reasons to believe that the next 10 years are going to be chock full of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and other calamities.

According to some rumored secret, scientific reports (presently being kept away from the public for obvious reasons), these disasters will be precipitated by the entry of an unknown “planetary body” from outer space.

This “planet” has been called various names “X-planet”, “Vulcan”, “12th planet” and others.

It is believed that the entry of this “planet” into our solar system will disturb the orbit of our planet and thereby trigger the above mentioned natural disasters.

It is also believed that all these have happened before in the past history of our planet and that it is probably the major cause of the decimation of previous civilization.

Nobody, including astronomers, can vouch for sure if these natural disasters will occur or not. It may merely be scientific speculation. Hopefully, they will not occur and the world will be saved from more extreme natural calamities and suffering. “Armageddon be gone!”

But if they occur, obviously, all the world economies will be hit hard and may collapse. Infrastructures in the major cities will collapse; internet, telephone and TV communications will be disrupted, as well as air and land transportation.

Many coastal cities, properties and their people will be swept away into the ocean. About a billion humans could perish and trillions of dollars worth of stock assets will disappear.

So far, the Indian ocean tsunami has left 5 million victims homeless, 500,000 seriously injured and about 150,000 dead.

The US government and President Bush are to be commended for sending more millions of dollars (so far about $350 million dollars) in aid and for spear-heading the relief effort.

Secretary of state, Mr. Colin L. Powell, and President Bush’s brother, Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida, have left yesterday for Asia.

Secretary General of UN, Mr. Kofi Annan is scheduled to depart today to tour the hardest-hit regions and to attend the conference of Southeast Asian nations taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Many countries of the world, charitable organizations and even individual US citizens have been reported to be currently working hard to raise funds and aid.

About 40 countries of the world have pledged $2 billion dollars in aid and more may be pouring in from more countries.

I have also read that Aol members have raised about $5 million dollars contribution in aid.

Sandra Bullock has donated $1 million dollars, and perhaps other actors, actresses, millionaires and billionaires will follow in her footsteps.

Big hearted Americans are flooding the charitable organizations with donations. The total amount from private and individual Americans is now about $200 million!

So far, Red Cross has received $79 million, American Jewish World Services about $2 millions, and Oxfam $12 million.

American TV networks are also planning special fund drives to contribute to the relief efforts.

Let us hope that these cash and aids will reach the intended victims in Southeast Asian nations and help to ease their unfortunate plights.

At present, you as an individual, may be a victim of a different kind of tsunami. You may be grappling with health, financial or economic tsunami.

Whatever it is, please cheer up because help may be nearer than you may realize.
